Reflections on a Potato

Arracacha - Roots' Colors

Arracacha – Roots’ Colors (Photo credit: CIP – International Potato Center)

Here are a couple thoughts that came to me while I dug out from the garden my first-ever batch of potatoes. I have to admit to some garden nerdery here, but I thought it was so fun to dig them out! It is a bit tedious, but just a treasure hunt with an almost guaranteed promise of finding the treasure that it is worth the slow work of finding the little stinkers. Read on, Dear Reader, and tell me what you think about potatoes (or anything else, for that matter)!

I am reminded of the bittersweet, always present in everyday existence. The holding so completely it hurts, but somehow, unable to willingly let go.

    Hey my lil’ “potato-head”
You have already done a wonderful job of planting and pulling out your new little potatoes. Your roots go deep and your foundations are strong. Build that new family and watch them grow new tendrils in new directions. Who knows, maybe someday our family will take over the world!!! (Ha!)

At dinner tonight I used a line from growing up when he asked me why we have to use table manners: “You never know when you’ll get a chance to dine with the president.” He objected, of course, but I loved being able to use that one on him and counter his objection with the idea that you just never know who you will cross paths with, or who you may become down the road! Props to you for driving that saying home, ya big spud.

    Dear Writer!
Be very proud of your potatoes! They are beautiful. And if the Downings ever take over the world I will be your humble servant.

You are too sweet — and you would of course be in the administration should world domination occur. I can see you as Secretary of State, I think. 🙂

Yes! Digging potatoes is my favorite garden event even though it’s messy. Those are some purty potatoes you dug up 🙂 I’m going to post a bunch of yummy potato recipes soon!
